It Happened at Pomona: Art at the Edge of Los Angeles, 1969-1973
“It
Happened at Pomona” consists of a series of three exhibitions
over nine months, featuring 29 artists, exploring cutting edge
contemporary practices during an especially fertile period in the
art world in Southern California. From 1969 to 1973, the Pomona
College Museum of Art presented some of the most experimental exhibitions
of contemporary art curated by Hal Glicksman and Helene Winer.
The display of groundbreaking works by artists who bridged the
gap between Post-Minimalism and Conceptual Art, such as Michael
Asher, Tom Eatherton, and Allen Ruppersberg, formed the educational
backdrop for a generation of artists who spent their formative
years in Los Angeles, like Pomona alumni Chris Burden, James Turrell,
and Mowry Baden. “It Happened at Pomona” includes
three exhibitions, all anchored by a mixed-media timeline, public
events, and a publication chronicling the activities of artists,
scholars, students, and faculty associated with the College during
this period.

The Pasadena Art Alliance is supporting the preparation,
design, and production of a multi-element timeline. The timeline
graphically represents the vitality of contemporary art in Southern
California and is an integral element of the project. The time
line incorporates all of the artists represented in the exhibition
and the context in which they generated their work. It will be
installed in the Museum throughout the three exhibitions (from
August 30, 2011-May 13, 2012), as well as included in the scholarly
catalogue.
Funding for the creation of a major installation in the exhibition “It
Happened at Pomona: Art at the Edge of Los Angeles, 1969-73,”
specifically a 70 ft. multi-media timeline documenting this vital
period in S. California art. The exhibition is part of the Getty’s
Pacific Standard Time initiative. Scheduled for August 2011 – May
2012.
