Pacific Asia Museum will present 46 N. Los Robles: A History
of the Pasadena Art Museum, guest curated by Jay Belloli,
and the first exhibition to take an in-depth look at the groundbreaking
work of the Pasadena Art Museum, originally located here at 46
N. Los Robles Avenue and a leading proponent of contemporary art
during a pivotal time in the nation’s cultural coming of
age. 46 N. Los Robles: A History of the Pasadena Art Museum will
for the first time trace the entire development of the Pasadena
Art Museum, focusing on its years in the Grace Nicholson Building
on North Los Robles Avenue, currently the home of Pacific Asia
Museum.
The exhibition will present more than 100 important modern
and contemporary works of art shown at the Pasadena Art Museum
in its groundbreaking special exhibitions, including paintings,
sculpture, prints, drawings, and documentation of performances.
Approximately 40 works, borrowed from local institutions and private
collections, will be on display and another 60 will be represented
digitally on large monitors in the galleries. In addition, there
will be installation photographs of the exhibitions and on-site
photographs of the important individuals involved in the Museum,
as well as news coverage, reviews and other contextual material,
all designed to convey the impact this one institution had on the
nation’s contemporary art scene.
The exhibition will also
highlight the Pasadena Art Museum’s public and community
programs and supporting organizations, including the Art Workshops,
Art Alliance, Fellows, and Men’s Committee, tracing the Museum’s
lasting influence on Pasadena and Southern California’s cultural
life.”
The Pacific Asia Museum is one of only four U.S. institutions
dedicated to the arts and culture of Asia and the Pacific Islands,
serving Los Angeles and the Greater Southern California region.
The museum’s mission is to further intercultural understanding
through the arts of Asia and the Pacific Islands. The museum’s
historic building has served as a center for art, culture and learning
in Pasadena since its construction in 1924 by pioneering collector
and entrepreneur Grace Nicholson as her residence, galleries, and
Treasure House/emporium. Ms. Nicholson’s championing of Asian
art early in the century set the tone for much of the Pasadena
community's arts-related activities during the ensuing decades.
The building also served as the site of the Pasadena Art Museum,
which was renowned for its groundbreaking exhibitions of contemporary
art.
