Bitter Mellon Trellis
Promiscuous Production: Breeding is Bittersweet

Mile, Los Angeles
With the idea of cross-pollinating bitter and sweet
melons, the Bitter Melon Trellis was constructed for the National Bitter
Melon Council with Fallen Fruit at LACMA. Participants harvested, trimmed,
bent, and lashed bamboo poles into a tunneling trellis. The project
is part of EATLACMA, a year-long program at the museum designed to
explore food as a curatorial theme. Materials: bamboo, twine, rebar,

Fat Fringe with LAYER
March 12, 2010 - April 8, 2010
The FIX Gallery, Pico-Union, Los Angeles
Fat Fringe was a collaborative
project between M&A and design office LAYER. The aim of the project
was to explore techniques for large scale, high volume paper cutting.
A die-cut paper canopy containing 500 units was developed by participants
in a series of weekend workshops led by designers Lisa Little and Emily
White of LAYER. Materials: paper, twine, staples
M&A
is a research center dedicated to pushing new and underused ideas for
landscape and architecture into view.
Funding in support of “MatterApp,” a series of five
off-campus design/build public workshops that culminate in architecturally
dynamic installations. Scheduled for March 2011 - March 2012.
